Journal #15

Bilbo wakes up to a calm battlefield, for his side had won. With the help of the Eagles, and Beron in his ferocious bear form, they were able to emerge victorious. A man was looking for Bilbo, but could not find him until Bilbo takes off the ring to become visible again. When Bilbo comes back he has to deal with the deaths of 3 dwarves, one being Thorin. The other two were named Fili and Kili. The reader then learns that Gandalf was fighting with other wizards against an evil necromancer. Bilbo takes a long journey home, making sure to go around Mirkwood this time. When he gets home, they judged him differently because hobbits do not go on adventures like that. They even thought that Bilbo was dead. Bilbo is happy to finally be home, safe and sound.

Journal #14

The one treasure that Throin wants, is the gem that Bilbo took, but he does not know that Bilbo has it. Bilbo sneaks out and gives the gem to the Elves and people of Esgaroth to use against Throin, Bilbo was trying to prevent a war from happening. At about this time in the book, Gandalf comes back from wherever he went. Throin accepts the deal to trade some of the treasure for that gem. When Throin finds out that it was Bilbo's fault he had to give up some treasure, he gets very angry, but Gandalf helps Bilbo out with this one. Throin's relatives have an army marching toward the treasure and try to take the gem back for him over a fight, but all of the sudden, a huge army of goblins and wargs comes along. All of the groups fight together against the goblins and wargs, and seem to be slowly loosing to the wargs. Soon Bilbo is knocked out again, this time by a rock.
Battle of the Five Armies

Journal #13

The town of Esgaroth is still sad because of what happened, but they begin to see the good side. They realize that the treasure is all unguarded, for they thought that Smaug had killed the dwarves. They realize that they can just use some of the treasures wealth to rebuild what was destroyed. Hearing of Smaugs death, an army of elves comes by to help out Esgaroth. When this army, along with the men of Esgaroth, make it to Lonely Mountain, they see that the dwarves are alive and guarding the treasure. Throin claims this is rightfully his and refuses to share, standing by this decision. Bilbo would not mind sharing some of the treasure but he has to side with the dwarves.

Journal #12

It turns out, that Smaug had traveled to to Esgaroth. The men see him in the distance and prepare themselves to shoot him with arrows. Smaug passes by and lights everything on fire and there is only one archer left, Bard. He is unsure what to do because everyone's arrows have just been bouncing of Smaugs hard skin. A bird comes and lands on his shoulder and tells him of the weak spot, the same weak spot that Bilbo had found about. Bard takes a perfect shot on the weak spot and kills the dragon. When Smaug comes falling out of the air, Bard jumps into the lake because Smaug destroys most of the town by crashing into it. The town is happy that Smaug is dead but they are also very sad that they have lost their homes and some of their loved ones.

Journal #11

In this part of the book they are all finally inside of the Lonely Mountain. They all hide in the secret entrance and debate on who goes in to check things out. They decide to send in Bilbo because he is the burglar. Bilbo goes in with his ring to make him invisible, and steals a small piece of treasure while Smaug is sleeping. When Smaug wakes up, he notices this small piece is gone and gives a roar, which causes an avalanche to trap them inside. Smaug then flies around to find out who stole his piece of treasure. When Smaug comes back and lays down, Bilbo goes back inside. Bilbo is invisible but Smaug still knows he is there. The two talk for a very confusing period of time, because it was hard to follow all the riddles that Bilbo said. Bilbo eventually learns of a soft spot on Smaug. Bilbo barley escapes from Smaugs fire breath. Smaug becomes enraged and thinks that Bilbo is from Esgaroth. When Smaug leaves to go to Esgaroth, all the dwarves come in to steal some treasure. Bilbo does not take much, only a gem and some kind of armor. All the dwarves take as much as they want. When everybody has what they can carry, they leave the main exit, the one that Smaug uses. Smuag still has not returned to guard his treasure. This leaves you wondering what could he possibly be up to , after reading this chapter in the novel.

Journal #10

Bilbo travels upriver and finally approaches the foot of the Lonely Mountain. The mountain is very dark and full of despair. The book describes how there is no growth in the ground because Smaug has burnt it all away, just a dark mountain surrounded by charred, black foliage. The main entrance of the mountain, (Smaug's entrance) seems too dangerous, so the crew tries to find that secret entrance that the map told them about. After searching for a long time they find a narrow passage way that has a door but they had no idea how to open it. Bilbo finally remembers the message on the moonlit map and a suns ray moves a rock to  bring a keyhole into sight. They act quickly and open up the door, they are now finally inside of Lonely Mountain, Smaug's Tomb.

Journal #9

After they float down the river and arrive at the town, they see that it is at the base of Lonely Mountain, the place that they are trying to get. Thorin seems to be a little cocky or confident that they are finally at the mountain, and he marches himself right into the town. Once in the town, Throin goes to town hall and announces his purpose, that he is there to reclaim what is rightfully his. The people of the town had all heard the tales and they knew the treasure that Thorin was talking about. The town treats Thorin, Bilbo, and everyone else like royalty. As soon as he can, Throin gathers up some materials for their quest, and they set off upriver toward Lonely Mountain.
A Drawing Of Lake Town

Journal #8

Bilbo and the dwarves begin to travel through Mirkwood, and it is dark and scary. It begins to be hard to tell day from night because the woods are so thick. They make it to the stream that Beorn had warned them about, to not touch it. Bombur (one of the dwarves) falls in and he is put into a sleep that lasts him for days. Later on, they see a clearing with Wood Elves sitting around a fire, when they go up to the clearing, the fire goes out and this leads to Bilbo passing out. He wakes up being confronted by a spider, and he kills it. Bilbo then uses his ring to lead the other spiders away and save all the dwarves, all but Thorin, the Head Dwarf, who was taken by the wood elves. Thorin will not reveal any information to the Wood Elves who are uneasy with new people. They throw him into the dungeon. The rest of the dwarves are captured, but not Bilbo, because he has the ring. He uses it to sneak past everyone and take some keys. Using the keys he unlocks all of his companions. To escape they float in barrels in a river. These barrels are used to float goods that the elves trade with the men of the town this river connects to, which is called Lake Town.
Floating Down The River

Journal #7

Bilbo manages to find his companions, who were worried about him and did not know whether to leave without him or not. He tells them a story of how he escaped without the ring, because he did not want anyone to know of the ring that he found. The group hears some Wargs, which are animals that are basically like wolfs, and they climb up into the trees to avoid them. The wargs go and tell the goblins, who come and set fire to the trees that they are hiding in. Soon a giant eagle flies in and saves everyone, the reader then learns that this is the Lord Of Eagles, who are all friends of Gandalfs. He saw the fires from his great roost and came in to save them. Gandalf takes everyone to his friend Beron, who is a bear-man. Beron provides food, shelter, and even lets them borrow ponies. He tells them to take the elf path through Mirkwood, which will throw off the goblins that still want to attack and kill all the dwarves, hobbit, and the wizard (Gandalf). There is no safe path through Mirkwood, but the north path is safer. When they get there, Gandalf has to leave and warns them to stick to the path and not to go off of it, and then he leaves.

Mirkwood

Journal #6

After they all escape, some goblins chase after the dwarves and hobbit. Bilbo does not run himself, instead he rides on a dwarf's back, slowing him down. One goblin catches up to the slowest dwarf and makes Bilbo fall off, and Bilbo blacks out. When he wakes up he is in a dark room and cannot see, but finds a ring while feeling around for an exit. Bilbo keeps the ring and puts it in his pocket. He then comes across Gollum, who everyone knows as the weird little creature that says "My Precious". After solving riddles with Gollum, he finds out the ring is very powerful, and makes whoever wears it invisible to their enemies, and uses it to help escape the Mountain, Gollum, and the Goblins.
Gollum and Bilbo in the dark cave on the Misty Mountains

Journal #5

When they finally head up the Misty Mountains, they take the route that they all feel is the best, and the safest. While they are on the mountain, a huge storm comes and they need to take shelter, so they all get inside a cave. During the night, when they are all safe and sound in the cave, Bilbo wakes up, seeing their ponies getting dragged into a big crack that had opened up. Bilbo yells and not long after, many goblins come out and grab everybody. Gandalf had not been taken because he reacted to Bilbo's shout and had time to escape. They are all taken to the Great Goblin, who tries to eat Throin because of the sword he had, which was called the Goblin Cleaver, which he took from the Trolls cave. Gandalf comes to the rescue again with a big fire, and attacks the Great Goblin with his sword, this opens up a chance for everyone else to run and some goblins follow.
Gandalf Facing The Great Gobin

Journal #4

The next morning, they travel to a city of elves which is called Rivendale. Rivendale is one of the last safe places to stay on their journey to the mountain. This town is at the feet of some mountains that are called the Misty Mountains, and these mountains are going to have to be passed by the group. The group is treated well and gets lots of rest here in Rivendale. They meet an elf named Elrond, and he is the Great Chief Elf. Elrond is very wise and tells them about some of their weapons, he also helps read the map with the Lonely Mountain on it. There are some words on it to help them find the secret entrance, but these words are only visible in a certain type of moonlight.

Journal #3

In the morning, all the dwarves and Gandalf wake up before Bilbo does, and they wait for him at a place called the Green Dragon. Gandalf rushes Bilbo off to meet all of them, and Bilbo is a little upset he did not get to eat more breakfast or have more time to prepare. Once he meets them, they take off on their adventure. During the earlier hours, Gandalf disappears and nobody knows where he went. On their first day, Bilbo gets his first task, which is to go and investigate a fire ahead. The fire is made and tended by 3 trolls who catch Bilbo, this leads to the dwarves coming which leads to them all being tied up by the trolls. They start a big argument with each other, and a voice, which they all think is each others voice, but it is actually Gandalf. They argue until sunlight, and die because sunlight turns trolls to stone. The crew is freed by Gandalf and they take some weapons out of the troll's cave, and are on their way.
Bilbo Investigating The Fire

Journal #2

The Dwarves and Gandalf start to discuss why they are all here, for an adventure. Thorin, the head Dwarf, had a grandfather that mined a mountain, inside the mountain there were lots of jewels and gold. Once his grandfather had all of this stuff, the word got out, and Smaug (A Dragon) came and invaded, now he has been guarding the treasure ever since. They want to go back and claim what is theirs. Normally, Bilbo would not want any part in going on an adventure to fight a dragon, but some part inside him craves adventure and he agrees to go and help them with their quest.

Smaug

Journal #1

In the first chapter, we are introduced to what seems to be the two main characters. The first one is Bilbo Baggins, and he is a hobbit. Hobbits are like people, only half of our size. They have bare feet with thick skin and they all love good food. Hobbits are not outgoing or crazy, they live in little caves in the hills, and like the peace and quiet. One morning Bilbo is out smoking his pipe and a tall man in a robe and hat comes by, this man's name is Gandalf. Gandalf speaks to Bilbo about adventure and Bilbo shows no interest. However, the next day, 13 dwarves arrive at his house and eat all his food, one dwarf has a hood with a silver string, and appears to be the head dwarf. They are all fed and served some drinks and play some music before they discuss business, an adventure.
